TOURISM – 5 tips on PR for tourism regions to attract bikers

The challenge of snow is an omnipresent topic for the entire tourism industry. This is one of the reasons why many regions are increasing their focus on spring/summer tourism while using existing infrastructure for biking. As a marketing and communication agency specializing in cycling, we are well-versed in the topic. RASOULUTION already supports many tourist regions and their bike parks on their plans for communications, partnerships, and events.

If tourism is limited to a few months a year, this brings considerable financial challenges for the region, local businesses, and its employees. This challenge is coming to a head for many: There is often little growth potential in winter regions. In the summer, there is a lot of potential. In addition to the economic aspect, winter tourism is often increasingly questionable regarding sustainability. Snow machines are being used more frequently and require a lot of energy. Snow-making machines are just one example of sustainability challenges.

Therefore, it is unsurprising that more regions are strengthening summer tourism. For many, a great summer activity like biking makes excellent sense.

These are our 5 tips on PR for tourism regions to attract bikers:

#1. Be and stay relevant

What does your region offer that is worthwhile to show off? For example, do you have bike trails, a bike park, infrastructure, or specific nature that bikers will appreciate?
The only way to stay at the top of the public’s mind is to remain a relevant force for as long as possible. So keep up with trends, and experiment with different offers and communication activities.
People (and, therefore, media) will only talk about you if you are doing things worth talking about, so keep your ear to the ground and create buzz as often as possible.

Three examples:

Lenzerheide becomes “Bike Kingdom” or, let’s say, a brand: The Swiss holiday region repositioned its entire mountain bike communication in 2019. With the creation of “Bike Kingdom,” the topic of mountain biking is given size and importance. This creates a platform that positions Lenzerheide as the MTB destination for excellence in the Alpine region.
Saalfelden Leogang is the MTB paradise: The region of Saalfelden Leogang Touristik GmbH, with its Bikepark Leogang, is a pioneer in MTB in Europe and has created a stronghold. They have hosted the UCI World Championships twice and will host the UCI MTB WO again in 2028.
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis focuses on families: The Austrian region Tourismusverband Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis focuses on families and constantly expands its bike program. Examples are special offers for families, children’s entertainment, bike school, and camps.

#2. Know your target group

If your target group is everyone, you will be wasting your budget. The magic word is “focus” when defining and knowing your target audience(s). If you have clarity, you can align your communication, and your customers will feel addressed. Our experience in consulting can support you in this step.

Two examples:

• Lines, Shred, Drop, Flow – These are words used by the target group “Freeriders,” You should, therefore, also use them in your communication.
• On the other hand, Families are interested in different topics. Family-friendly regions that value safety are essential to them, and they are usually more price-sensitive. Families are unlikely to be attracted by a picture of a daredevil descent.

Related questions are:

• Who is my target group? Narrow down age, place of residence, interests, income, etc.
• What is important to them?
• Do they have “pain points”?

#3. Storytelling! Storytelling! Storytelling!

An article in a well-known medium does not require a huge budget, but being featured in the public eye is not worth much unless you have a good story. So the challenge is to find an angle or teaser that interests the public.
How do you do this? First, put yourself in the shoes of someone who has never heard of your region. Then, what title or topic would make that person want to learn more?
Let’s take this blog post as an example. Since you have read this far, you must have originally been interested in something about the title. We mainly want to provide added value for employees in tourism regions that could become our partners.

#4. An image can sell a story

Unfortunately, we see this one often: the offer is right, the media release is excellent, but pictures are skimped on, and then people wonder why the media coverage is poor.
We often tell our clients that high-quality, eye-catching imagery is key (great sceneries, blue skies, mountains, and bright colors). When creating an up-to-date content pool, it is also important to have various people in pictures: genders, ages, family orientations etc.
Additionally, pictures are one thing. But we all know video content is vital.

Two great video content examples:

• The Legend of Tommy G: for the Lenzerheide Marketing und Support AGand their Lenzerheide Bike Kingdom launch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RoQPTrGGXo
• Jackson Goldstone: Day out with Dad: riding in Serfaus https://youtu.be/8ulQX0tFVDQ

#5. It takes time

A strong network in the media landscape takes time and is built step by step. It often takes several attempts and conversations until media coverage gets proper traction.
However, this tip isn’t meant to encourage you to wait and see but to emphasize that media work involves a lot of effort and a flexible mindset. We are used to long-term work with our clients and have established excellent relationships with the best journalists and digital influencers in the bike scene.

ATHLETES – Pushing the sport – Patricia Druwen is ready for 2023, the 16yr. old signs with ROSE and SRAM

Women’s mountain biking has progressed tremendously over the last few years, and a young girl from Germany, Patricia Druwen, is at the forefront of that progression.

Patricia had a great 2022 season with solid results in iconic events while landing tricks that no other girl has: finishing the season as the leader of the FMB World Tour Women’s Ranking. For 2023 Patricia plans to defend her lead, ride new disciplines, and compete at Crankworx for the first time.

Patricia Pat was born in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, in 2007. During her childhood, gymnastics became her passion. Later, curiosity got to her, and she started using her gymnastic skills on her street bike. Three years ago, in January 2020, Patricia got her first dirt jump bike, which she fell in love with immediately.

In an incredibly short period, thanks to her talent and devotion on the bike, Patricia secured the title ‘Queen of Gnar’ at one of the most renowned freeride events, the Audi Nines. She has also made a name for herself in the slopestyle world, with several podium spots, including being one of the first-ever female riders in Red Bull District Ride, where she earned 3rd in the Best Trick contest. With all these results, Patricia finished the 2022 season as the current FMB World Tour and Swiss National Series leader and the FMB Best Trick award in her category.

Having joined the global program of ROSE Bikes and SRAM/RockShox and partnering up with Title, Troy Lee Designs, and Industry Nine, Patricia is more than ready to tackle the 2023 season and defend her FMB World Tour lead.
Early this year she pushed the limits at La Poma with incredible trick combinations like 360 triple bar spins or backflip double bar spins will help her achieve this goal.

“Patricia is an awesome rider! The first time I saw her was on Instagram and I was impressed with the style she has and the tricks that she is doing. When I first met her, she was riding the most technical trails with such ease and control. I’ve never met a girl with such motivation, she always wants to learn new tricks and go bigger! I am really stoked for her!” – Erik Fedko.

Besides slopestyle competitions, she will compete at Crankworx Speed & Style and participate in big bike events like The Nines again.

Stay tuned for a great season and even more progression in women’s mountain biking.

ATHLETES – How BMX saved Nikita Ducarroz’s life

Nikita Ducarroz will compete in the BMX Freestyle World Championships in less than a month in Abu Dhabi (UAE). While the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist is considered a medal hope, her story of mental health gives hope to others.

The daughter of a Swiss father and an American mother, Ducarroz enjoyed the benefits of dual citizenship and grew up in Northern California while spending summers with her grandparents in Geneva, Switzerland.

At the age of thirteen, Ducarroz began suffering from severe anxiety attacks, which led her to isolation within her own home.

“BMX helped me to overcome my fears”

It wasn’t until she found a BMX video on YouTube that she began to break free from the isolation she felt. At first, she saved up for a bike and practiced in her driveway. Day by day, trick by trick, her love for the sport grew. Eventually, the sport led her to do something that scared her to death: she took the plunge and went to ride at her neighborhood skate park. By doing this, she took a step toward overcoming her anxiety and began her BMX career.

Nikita continued to work hard and build her skills. It wasn’t long before she won competitions – first at the local level, then at the national level, and finally on the world stage as one of the best BMX riders.

She says that she owes her life to BMX: “The bike made me get out of the house, go to the skate park, and eventually get on a plane. It pushed me and gave me a reason to overcome all my fears.”

Ready for the World Championships?

In early 2020, before the Olympics, Nikita realized she needed to improve her skills to be among the world’s elite. She began riding at a park in North Carolina, where she trained with the best riders in the world, which proved to be the key to her success. She decided to move to North Carolina full-time. Her commitment paid off with a bronze medal at the games.

Her hard work will truly come to show at this year’s season highlight, The Urban Cycling World Championships in Abu Dhabi, where the 26-year-old will compete in the freestyle discipline.

With several podium finishes at World Cup events since 2016, a second place at the 2021 World Championships, and a third at the Olympics, the Swiss-American Ducarroz is undoubtedly a favorite for the top spot.

Nikita is often asked at major events whether she is still struggling with health problems. “Yes, my panic attacks are not a thing of the past. But they have improved a lot over the years,” she comments confidently.

Her MindTricks platform

Just as Ducarroz found many years ago, a video helped her overcome her mental health challenges. She now wants to help others do the same. With this in mind, she and her friend Patrick Kelly created the Instagram account MindTricks.

MindTricks is aimed at athletes from the world of action sports and beyond and is a judgment-free platform meant to discuss mental health challenges.

Nikita hopes that her story and the discussion on the posts will encourage others to share their own mental health struggles while being inspired and connected to other athletes going through tough times. The ultimate goal is for individuals to realize that they are not alone and can overcome anything.

ATHLETES – Gabriel Wibmer releases groundbreaking new MTB Edit: The Grind

Gabriel Wibmer, part of the next generation of mountain biking’s Trials and Freeride scene, has pulled out all the stops in his latest edit. ‘The Grind’ sees the young Austrian lift his creativity to another level, hitting the streets of Hamburg with a new perspective on what obstacles can be ridden, and how he can ride them.

Already known for his incredible ability to blend Trials and Freeride disciplines into mind bending edits, Gabriel has added inspiration from BMX street and flatland into the mix to create this truly unique piece of content. Gabriel approached bike sponsor Canyon, with an idea to produce grind pegs which would work on his full-suspension Spectral AL trail bike. Machined from scratch, these custom-made BMX style pegs were the first step on Gabriel’s journey towards producing this all new edit.

From rail grinds to flat land spins, Gabriel unlocked a whole bag of new tricks while getting to grips with the grind pegs and goes on to explore what’s possible on this one-of-a-kind MTB setup.

“Our idea was to combine MTB with BMX and for this we watched several BMX edits and one thing became clear to us very quickly – we would definitely need Grind Pegs!
With the help of Canyon, this idea was very quickly implemented, so within 2 weeks I had an absolute dream bike with a custom made axle and Grind Pegs. Of course, we did not know at the time, whether this could work at all, but that’s exactly why the whole project was so exciting for us.
After some initial difficulties, we went to Hamburg for 14 days to realize the whole project. Of course, not everything went according to plan, but I’m definitely stoked that we were able to bring the whole idea to life and implement a piece of BMX into the MTB scene.” – Gabriel Wibmer

What does the future hold for MTB grinds? Only time will tell. But this pioneering new edit is now live and available to view.

What’s with the cliff-hanger? The Grind isn’t the only thing Gabriel has been working on this year. Stay tuned for even more jibs, sends and tricks coming soon.

ATHLETES – Amy Ertel joins RASOULUTION

If you’ve ever been to Whistler Bikepark, you’ve probably been overtaken by a golden-haired rider – her name is Amy Ertel. She has just joined the RASOULUTION team to get support in her professional career, giving Amy the opportunity to focus on riding.

Born and raised in the heart of the mountain bike capital, Whistler, BC (CAN). Amy discovered mountain biking at an early age through her father who she still rides with today.

“With more and more girls and women shredding bike parks and taking on freeriding, it is exciting to watch the progression of female mountain biking. We want to be a part of it of course, as the development of the sport has always been one of RASOULUTION’s key targets. Having Amy Ertel join our athlete roster is awesome, she comes from Whistler and can shred the motherland of bike parks every day. Amy is really positive and dedicated to mountain biking, so she shares our passion and values.” – Tarek Rasouli, founder of RASOULUTION.

Improving her level gradually, Amy started to take an interest in competitions to the point that today she has several good results to her name.

In the 2021 season Amy achieved a second place in the Stevie Smith Memorial Race – BC/CAN Downhill Cup and a fourth place in the prestigious Crankworx Series – Air DH in BC. So far in the 2022 season the 20-year-old has placed second and third in the BC DH Cup, a finalist at the Crankworx Whistler Whipoff and has participated in the Darkhorse events in Revelstoke (CAN), and Bellingham (USA).

“Stoked to hear Amy is joining the team, I’m good friends with her myself and whenever I’m in Whistler we go shredding together. Super cool girl, mega talented and super steezy.” – Erik Fedko.

“I’ve been following Amy’s riding on social media for a while and met her in Canada 2022 for the first time. She’s one of the kindest people I know, and I really like her creative and sweet personality. I’m a big fan of her style, especially on the big bike. Personally, it’s very inspiring to see her shred and I’m excited to follow her journey.” – Alma Wiggberg.

With all this, Amy’s dreams have only become bigger. She is compassionate and enthusiastic about achieving her goal of becoming one of the best CWX riders and freeriders in the world. Amy has set her sights on competing on the entire CWX World Tour, The Nines and Red Bull Formation by 2023.

“I am extremely excited to be working with RASOULUTION for the upcoming years. They represent some of the biggest athletes in the sport and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.” – Amy Ertel

But you can’t ride a bike 24 hours a day. The young rider works as a nurse at Squamish General Hospital and in her spare time she enjoys hiking, fishing, skiing and playing pickleball.

BRANDS – ABUS CliffHanger – The Brand-New High-End Enduro Helmet

The CliffHanger enduro helmet is the new premium open face model from ABUS. Developed and designed from scratch in close cooperation with team riders such as freeride legend Richie Schley, the helmet addresses the needs of ambitious mountain bikers who have high demands and expectations when it comes to material and equipment. Regardless of whether you are shuttling in Tuscany, shredding single tracks in Slovenia or taking an after-work e-MTB ride – the CliffHanger is a safe companion, both in function and look.

Few years ago, the product development team at ABUS started the task of developing a worthy successor to the successful MonTrailer performance model. The goal: to develop an open face helmet for enduro riders and ambitious singletrack fans as well as a specific small group with the highest demands – their own gravity team. The result is a lightweight but robust helmet with a plus in safety.

Safety has always been crucial to the experts at ABUS. In order to increase it even more, the CliffHanger’s shell has been significantly deepened at the back of the head when compared to the previous model, ensuring extra coverage. For additional stability, the proven Acti-Cage structural reinforcement is integrated into the EPS core.

A helmet with an optimal fit is essential when you are going downhill fast and dynamic: this is ensured by the Zoom-Ace adjustment system, which can be perfectly tailored for individual adjustment. One practical feature carries over from previous models: long hair or a pigtail find their place in the Ponytail Outlet, a gap between the adjustment system and the lower edge of the helmet. The chin strap can be individually adjusted, too, using the newly developed TriVider and is quickly closed thanks to the Fidlock mechanism. Eight ventilation inlets on the front and six outlets on the back provide refreshing air circulation. The helmet’s visor is height adjustable and provides plenty of room for your goggle when in upward position.

Team rider Richie Schley, who was involved in the development of the top model from the start, has plenty of praise for the new helmet: “We have been working on the development of the CliffHanger helmet for three years now and I am totally stoked on how awesome it came out. Looks cool, super lightweight, great airflow and very comfortable. I think we totally nailed it with the colours as well.”

Nine colour options are QUIN ready, so they can be easily updated with the QUIN system. Six further models also feature the well-known MIPS system. Two models are directly equipped with QUIN sensors for crash detection.

The brand new ABUS CliffHanger will be available in stores as of now.

BRANDS – fizik launches its first shoes with GORE-TEX

fizik is expanding its footwear to offer two models with the GORE-TEX Koala membrane. This addition will be ideal for winter and cold mountain biking. The TERRA ARTICA GTX shoes will be the ideal companion for MTB riders who are not afraid of the cold. The new model, with a revised design, is full of technical details that will allow for sporty outings, even in the harsh conditions of the off-season.

fizik is pleased to present its first two models of shoes equipped with GORE-TEX. After two years of work, the brand of the Italian company, Selle Royal Group, now offers a durable option for training in rougher conditions.

Out of the two models, one is dedicated to the road, the TEMPO ARTICA GTX, and the other is dedicated to the mountains, the TERRA ARTICA GTX.

The TERRA ARTICA GTX is suitable for all types of mountain biking, with enduro, cross-country, and gravel as the main disciplines. This durable mountain bike shoe lives under the motto of “for good rides in bad weather”. The TERRA ARTICA GTX shoe takes away all excuses to let poor weather get in the way of a ride. “It depends on the region of the world and personal preferences, but we had to expand our line with a real model for fall and winter rides,” says Alex Locatelli, fizik’s product manager.

While keeping the brand’s style, fizik worked on a special three-layer construction. The GORE-TEX Koala membrane is paired with an inner fleece lining to keep the feet warm and an outer layer of synthetic leather for a better look. The membrane is completely waterproof. It is impermeable to the outside elements (rain, snow, moisture, etc.) and allows ideal ventilation, allowing the shoe to breathe while keeping in your warmth. “These versatile models allow you to ride your bike while keeping your feet completely dry. The sole has also been redesigned for winter use”, says Giovanni Fogal, brand manager at fizik. More versatile than ever, the X5 outsole was redesigned for a better grip and more traction in slippery winter conditions.

In addition to the materials, the ARTICA GTX shoes are equipped with the BOA® closure system. This intelligent and patented system allows you to quickly put on and take off your shoes while keeping your gloves on. The classic laces are replaced by a stainless-steel wire that is connected to a mechanical knob that allows you to tighten, lock and loosen the laces.

This combination of the GORE-TEX membrane and the BOA system, along with a revised design, makes the TERRA ARTICA GTX models unique on the market.

The new model is offered in two unisex colors (grape and black), with sizes ranging from 36 to 48.

THE WOMEN OF RED BULL DISTRICT RIDE

In addition to spectacular slopestyle action, an unbelievable 120,000 spectators and a firework display of world’s firsts, the Red Bull District Ride 2022 also had one more novelty: For the first time in the history of the Nuremberg-based urban freeride event, five women were giving their everything on the breathtaking course between Kaiserburg and Hauptmarkt. The Red Bull TV video “Women’s Progression Session” tells their story.

Caroline Buchanan (AUS), Gemma Corbera (ESP), Patricia Druwen (GER), Kathi Kuypers (GER) and Ellie Chew (NZL) made up the quintet that was allowed to practice on an FMB Diamond mountain bike slopestyle course for the first time in history. As part of the official training sessions, the five female riders had the opportunity to prove their skills on what is probably the most spectacular slopestyle course in the world, to train with the best male riders in the world and to improve their own riding through mutual exchange. During the three days on site, they were able to tackle the various obstacles and try out what is possible at their own pace and without the pressure of competition.

The highlight for the five women was definitely the actual attendance in the Best Trick Contest of the Red Bull District Ride 2022 on Nuremberg’s packed main market. After several thrilling runs on the Big Air Jump, with Suicide No Handers, Caroline attempting a frontflip or Ellie attempting a Backflip Nac Nac, it was Gemma Corbera, who finally decided the contest with a backflip.

“Being part of the Red Bull District Ride was great. The best thing was being able to train with the guys again and have these insane jumps that I don’t have at home. The atmosphere between the riders was good as always and it was an incredible experience to ride in front of such a big crowd. I really enjoyed tackling the big jumps and I truly hope there will be more slopestyle events for women soon.” – Patricia Druwen

“The atmosphere during the Red Bull District Ride was great between us. I love riding with the girls and hanging out together, we were supporting each other and pushing each other’s levels the whole time. I’ve been dreaming about this event my whole life, and it’s made me realize that I have to keep chasing my dreams. I hope for more events like this!” – Gemma Corbera

About Red Bull District Ride

The Red Bull District Ride is the biggest urban Mountain Bike slopestyle event in the world, taking place in the old city center of Nuremberg, Germany. Highlights of the Red Bull District Ride are the Best Trick Contest on Friday evening and the Slopestyle Contest on Saturday, where the world’s best 15 MTB slopestyle riders compete.

The Red Bull District Ride follows a course from the Kaiserburg to the Hauptmarkt, where the grand finale takes place with the Big Air Jump in the heart of Nuremberg. The course leads right through the old town and is divided into five different districts, which each requires different skills from the riders. The Red Bull District Ride doesn’t feel like a pure slopestyle or freeride contest as it also includes a few elements of skate park riding, but with big jumps, drops and step-downs. A highlight in every athlete’s calendar, the Red Bull District Ride is always the scene of thrilling action and various tricks that have never been seen before, so-called “world’s firsts” on the mountain bike.

After 2005, 2006, 2011, 2014 and 2017, where 80.000 people attended the event, the Red Bull District Ride took place for the sixth time this year, attracting over 120,000 visitors. Joining the ranks of the previous winners Aaron Chase (USA), Cam McCaul (USA), Sam Pilgrim (GBR), Brandon Semenuk (CAN) and Nicholi Rogatkin (USA) was Swedish rider Emil Johansson in 2022. As a Diamond Event, the Red Bull District Ride is part of the Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour.

ATHLETES – Thomas Genon’s Mine Line.

Thomas Genon aka Tommy G, known for one of the best styles in mountain biking is on his way to his 9th consecutive Red Bull Rampage.

Tommy showcases his proven track record for creating artistic content in his latest video project, Mine Line. Here he uses his unique riding style to pay homage to his heritage. In the heart of his Belgian roots, Mine Line sees Tommy showing his gratitude for his great-grandfather in a way only he could!

Ancestor veneration is one of the most widespread spiritual practices in the world. It is celebrated differently in different cultures, but in general, there is nothing better than honoring your history by doing what you do best.

Mine Line is all about friendship, hard work, and open-mindedness. Values that bring us to Genon’s hometown, Liège, Belgium, also home to one of the four authentic coal mines in Europe.

Tommy shows his excellent riding close to his origin by building and riding with friends in his city’s coal mine on the mine’s slag heap.

“When I look back on this project, what stands out the most are the weeks I spent with my friends, building, riding, and shooting. It was a great experience that will remain a memory of happy moments with my friends.

The idea came up some time ago, but it took a while to become a reality. Also, the fact that it was where I grew up and having my family around was amazing. The project itself is something that takes me back a few generations and is much more meaningful.” – Thomas Genon.

Two of the most well-known names in action sport filmmaking were a big part of this project: Rupert Walker, a filmmaker from Victoria, BC, and Clay Porter from California.

Rupert is known for dropping some undeniably skilled clips, both as a biker and a filmmaker. Working on various projects within the MTB scene, he frequently creates content with legends like Brandon Semenuk. Most recently releasing the amazing work of Parallel, Rupert has shown once again his talent and creativity in the latest project with Thomas Genon.

Behind the other lens was Clay Porter. Since the age of 17, Porter has dedicated his life to filmmaking, with projects all over the world. Clay has contributed to the progress of the sport with each new release and by creating films such as Deathgrip.

“Rupert is my favorite person in the world to work with. It’s the best thing in the world any time you get to work with a creative partner that you really respect.” – Clay Porter.

“It’s always good when projects go well, and you can finish without anyone getting hurt. You get to stick all the shots. I’m very happy to work with Clay, he’s like one of my best friends, and he inspires me a lot.” – Rupert Walker.

BRANDS – ABUS AirDrop – New Full-Face Helmet for Enduro and Bikepark

ABUS is happy to present its first full-face helmet for gravity enthusiasts. The ABUS AirDrop scores big with elaborate details, its light weight, optimal fit and an affordable price. The new flagship of the mountain bike helmet portfolio of the ABUS safety experts is the result of several years of R & D with the direct support and regular input of team riders Cedric Gracia, Richie Schley and Gabriel Wibmer. Check out Gabriel and Cedric testing the Airdrop on La Palma, Canary Islands.

Autodesk VRED Design 2021

Bike park laps, steep exposed trails on the enduro bike or a session on the pump track: when it comes to speed and airtime on the mountain bike, the upgrade to all-round protection is a sensible choice. With the AirDrop, ABUS now has a full- face helmet in its range that offers complete protection, easy handling, and a high level of comfort, while also being visually impressive.

The fit is one of the most important criteria when choosing a helmet: the AirDrop can be adjusted at the back of the head using the practical Zoom-Ace adjustment system, which has been fully integrated into the well-known MIPS system. The cheek pads are removable, washable and available in different sizes for a truly individual fit. The height-adjustable visor comes with a break-away mechanism in the event of a heavy crash. The open design on the front provides an excellent field of vision and suits a wide variety of goggles, while the movable visor allows for an action-cam mount. The padded layers on the helmet’s underside, aptly named Collarbone Protection, protect the collarbone in the event of a crash.

All-round mountain bike talent Gabriel Wibmer was able to test the helmet extensively: “I really enjoyed riding with the new ABUS AirDrop helmet. The fit, the performance and of course the light weight makes it a perfect choice for a ride with the enduro and the downhill bike. Besides the performance, the new helmet has a unique and awesome look which perfectly fits my style.”
ABUS relies on tried and tested materials for production. The helmet is produced using the InMold process, which means that the outer shell is durable connected to the shock-absorbing EPS. The chin guard is made of ABS material. The core is improved with the Acti-Cage, a structural reinforcement to optimize stability, which allows for larger ventilation openings. A total of eleven air inlets on the front and six outlets on the back ensure perfect air circulation so that the helmet can also be worn easily when pedaling uphill. Thanks to a further opening at ear level, the Ambient Sound Channel, you always stay aware of your surroundings. All AirDrop models are equipped with MIPS and are QUIN ready, so they can easily be upgraded with the QUIN system for crash detection, which is already fully integrated in the top model only.

Downhill and freeride veteran Cedric Gracia has incorporated his wishes and feedback into the ABUS AirDrop and is more than happy with the result: “I am so happy about the final product. What I love the most about the helmet is definitely the fitting system. It’s super easy to put on and fits perfectly. Also, the breathability is working perfect, and your head is not overcooking. I never had any problems with fogging even in the summer heat. We know there are a lot of helmets on the market, but I think we raised the game. I am so proud and I think people are going to be surprised.”

During this years Red Bull District Ride in Nuremberg (Germany) mountain bike fans could already check out the Airdrop at the ABUS booth. ABUS wasn’t only official event partner but was also represented through two world class riders: Lucas Huppert and Tom Isted just recently joined the ABUS roster and entertained the crowd of more than 100,000 spectators with their spectacular runs which ranked seventh and eighth.

Honor where honor is due – Tarek Rasouli inducted in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame

This past weekend, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame of Marin Museum of Bicycling in Fairfax, California inducted their 2022 new inductees into the prestigious and honored group of the best in sport. Furthermore, the inductees of 2020 and 2021 have been honored as well, making the ceremony a huge gathering of the legends of the sport. Among this year’s honorees is the German freeride legend Tarek Rasouli, who earned his spot through a long and illustrious career in the sport as both a rider and a great advocate.

As only the fourth German after Regina Stiefl, Wolfgang Renner, and Uli Stanciu, Tarek Rasouli has the honor of being inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. A decision probably not difficult for the jury, it’s nevertheless worth taking another look at the career of the Munich mountain bike jack-of-all-trades that ultimately has led him to the Marin Museum of Bicycling.

Rasouli’s affection for bicycles was already evident in his early youth in various National and International BMX competitions, culminating in winning the German championship in 1991 and a fourth place at the 1992 World Championships in Brazil. During this time, Tarek discovered mountain biking, and he worked as a rider for the German BIKE Magazine. Tarek made an international name for himself as one of the best European freeriders and became the only non-Canadian member of the legendary Rocky Mountain Frorider team in 2000 alongside Wade Simmons, Richie Schley, and Brett Tippie. At the latest after his appearance in several segments in Bjoern Enga’s Kranked IV film “Search of the Holey Trail”, which launched in 2001, Rasouli belonged to the big names in the freeride world across the Atlantic. During this time he also took part in the first freeride contests and won the Red Bull Build & Ride in Switzerland, for example.

Tarek’s passion for the sport was particularly evident after a serious accident at Sun Peaks resort in Canada in 2002 while shooting for Kranked 5 left him paralyzed. This injury would leave him with lifelong injuries and confine him to a wheelchair. While others may have blamed the sport, Tarek was certain of one thing despite all the possible uncertainties: he would stay true to mountain biking!

Over the past 20 years, Tarek has become one of the most important and influential personalities of mountain bike freeriding. After initially taking care of the freeride pages of BIKE magazine as a freelance journalist, he started setting up internationally renowned urban freeride events, beginning with an event called Ride to the Lake.

In 2005 Tarek founded RASOULUTION, an agency that has since organized events, such as the Red Bull District Ride, the Nissan Qashqai Challenge, and the X Games mountain bike slopestyle contest in Munich. All of these events brought in massive crowds and showcased mountain biking to hundreds of thousands – the Red Bull District Ride 2022 alone attracted over 120,000 spectators.

On top of event organization, RASOULUTION is also an athlete management agency and disoccered and has worked with the biggest names in the sport, such as Danny MacAskill, Fabio Wibmer, Thomas Genon, Emil Johansson, Andreu Lacondeguy, Martin Söderström, Tomas Lemoine or Erik Fedko to name only a some. In addition, Rasouli and RASOULUTION provide advice and active support to numerous brands and tourism destinations. Rasouli was also significantly involved in the professionalization of slopestyle mountain biking by founding the Freeride Mountain Bike Association in 2010.

With this year’s induction into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame – together with Gunn-Rita Dahle, Ot Pi, and Jim Busby – the Munich resident is honored to be recognized for his tireless commitment to mountain biking and is proud to be in there with fellow teammates Simmons, Schley, and Tippie, who as Rocky Mountain Frorider have been honorees since 2010.

“I am extremely honored to be inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Mountain biking has shaped my life and even after my accident I was just happy to stay part of the scene. I wanted to make the sport grow, which I definitely succeeded, thanks to many colleagues at RASOULUTION and especially my sister Nathalie, as well as many partners. This year the inductees of three years came to Fairfax, California and were officially inducted into the Hall of Fame. Being honored together with legends like Pinkbike’s founder Radek Burkat, freeride legend Darren Berrecloth, Bikepark Whistler founder Rob McSkimming, BMX and MTB pro Dave Cullinan – who was one of my idols in the 80’s & 90’s – MTB racing legends like Rachel Atherton and Gunn-Rita Dahle, MBUK founder Tym Manley & UK photo icon Steve Behr and bike developer Jim Busby is an absolute career highlight. Congratulations to everyone mentioned! Also, special thanks to Otis Guy and Joe Breeze, who blasted the first mountain bikes down the mountain at Fairfax in 1973. It was a special honor for me to meet both of them. If you make it to San Francisco, you should definitely visit the Marin Museum of Bicycling in Fairfax. Long live the mountain bike, let’s keep sending it!” – Tarek Rasouli

ATHLETES – RASOULUTION riders with strong performances at CWX Whistler

It was an amazing week for our athletes at Crankworx Events in Whistler, Canada!

Some of the world’s best gravity mountain bike athletes rode in several competitions throughout the world’s most iconic mountain bike gravity festival.

Our athletes performed in several competitions. The highlights started last Thursday with the @Clif Bar Speed & Style competition. In the women’s category our Swedish athlete Alma Wiggberg achieved a strong 2nd place and our French allround talent Tomas Lemoine won the men’s Speed & Style comp.

The highlight event was again on Saturday: the @Red Bull Joyride. It is the Superbowl of Mountain Bike Slopestyle featuring the 15 World’s best FMB World Tour riders, amongst them 4 of our athletes and 3 of them made it into the top 5.

Just coming out of an injury with a surgery 4 weeks prior to the event, Emil Johansson (SWE) performed again incredibly strong and was able to defend his Red Bull Joyride title from 2019, he won the 8th consecutive Crankworx FMBA World Championship event.

With his 3rd competition within the Crankworx week, Tomas Lemoine (FRA) stood out the most from all competitors at Crankworx, not only because he was able to podium in several disciplines and he is leaving Whistler as the leader of the “King of Crankworx” standings, but also because he jumped an obstacle, the final feature of the slopestyle course, that no one has done and that showed enormous courage and extreme skills. He managed to get 3rd place behind his good friend Tim Bringer and just ahead of our German athlete Erik Fedko who probably won the unofficial award of “best looking outfit” of Red Bull Joyride.

Unlucky was our Belgian Freeride legend Thomas Genon aka Tommy G. The winner of the 2012 Red Bull Joyride crashed in his first run so hard that he had to decide not to ride his second run. But we are happy that he is fine and healthy and we can’t wait to watch him at Red Bull Rampage in October.

Here you find the top 3 runs of the slopestyle:

We look forward seeing most of those 15 riders in less than 3 weeks in Nuremberg for Red Bull District Ride.

ATHLETES – Thomas Genon heads to Utah in new edit “No Schedule”

The iconic dust and rock of the 45th State is no stranger to having Belgian freeride athlete Thomas Genon, aka Tommy G, tearing down its shale slopes and launching off its cliff faces. But while Tommy has visited Utah on eight separate occasions, all of these trips have been centred around riding in one of the wildest sporting events on the planet: Red Bull Rampage.

Rampage is an event that pushes riders, and the sport of MTB to new limits. But the brutal back-to-back digging days, the limited time to test and perfect lines, and the pressure cooker that is Rampage finals day no doubt have an effect on riders reaching their full potential.

‘No Schedule’ is a video concept that builds off the back of Tommy’s multiple Rampage experiences. The project sets out to answer a question: away from the structure and time constraints of contest riding, what can a rider like Tommy do with the legendary Utah terrain? To find an answer to this, the project sees Tommy head out to the desert on a 3week trip with good friends Louis Reboul, Eliott Lapotre and Paul Fisson. With videographer Christian Rigal capturing the madness.

“After all my trips to Utah, I had so many ideas I wanted to try, but never got the chance. The ‘No Schedule’ project was really about finally getting the chance to explore these ideas. Having the time to shape stuff until it was dialled and waiting until the wind dropped to ride features was awesome. I felt like I could push things more than ever before.” – Thomas Genon

With endless style, insane moves, experimental features and epic scenery, ‘No Schedule’ achieves all it set out to do.

It goes without saying that special projects like this, need special equipment. For ‘No Schedule’ Tommy used a custom painted Canyon Torque CF- with artwork to match the sandstone ridgelines and cliffs of Utah. The specification was based around the build Tommy used at the 2021 edition of Red Bull Rampage, featuring a dual crown Marzocchi 58 fork, Shimano brakes and transmission, Schwalbe tires and Novatec wheels. This unique bike, which blends capability and playfulness in equal measure was another inspiration for the project.

“I have always loved riding big bikes in big terrain. But this new Canyon Torque CF build was something different for me. In the past it took some effort to get the DH bikes in the air and move them around. But the Torque just wants to get airborne. It’s so much fun.”   – Thomas Genon
