Riding Culture is looking to add to its legitimacy in bike parks. The young Swiss brand, known for its extremely abrasion-resistant pants for two-wheelers, is expanding its range with the new Sender collection. The line is dedicated to all downhill-oriented MTB disciplines. Nikita Ducarroz will compete in the BMX Freestyle World Championships in less than a month in Abu Dhabi (UAE). While the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist is considered a medal hope, her story of mental health gives hope to others.

The daughter of a Swiss father and an American mother, Ducarroz enjoyed the benefits of dual citizenship and grew up in Northern California while spending summers with her grandparents in Geneva, Switzerland.

At the age of thirteen, Ducarroz began suffering from severe anxiety attacks, which led her to isolation within her own home.

“BMX helped me to overcome my fears”

It wasn’t until she found a BMX video on YouTube that she began to break free from the isolation she felt. At first, she saved up for a bike and practiced in her driveway. Day by day, trick by trick, her love for the sport grew. Eventually, the sport led her to do something that scared her to death: she took the plunge and went to ride at her neighborhood skate park. By doing this, she took a step toward overcoming her anxiety and began her BMX career.

Nikita continued to work hard and build her skills. It wasn’t long before she won competitions – first at the local level, then at the national level, and finally on the world stage as one of the best BMX riders.

She says that she owes her life to BMX: “The bike made me get out of the house, go to the skate park, and eventually get on a plane. It pushed me and gave me a reason to overcome all my fears.”

Ready for the World Championships?

In early 2020, before the Olympics, Nikita realized she needed to improve her skills to be among the world’s elite. She began riding at a park in North Carolina, where she trained with the best riders in the world, which proved to be the key to her success. She decided to move to North Carolina full-time. Her commitment paid off with a bronze medal at the games.

Her hard work will truly come to show at this year’s season highlight, The Urban Cycling World Championships in Abu Dhabi, where the 26-year-old will compete in the freestyle discipline.

With several podium finishes at World Cup events since 2016, a second place at the 2021 World Championships, and a third at the Olympics, the Swiss-American Ducarroz is undoubtedly a favorite for the top spot.

Nikita is often asked at major events whether she is still struggling with health problems. “Yes, my panic attacks are not a thing of the past. But they have improved a lot over the years,” she comments confidently.

Her MindTricks platform

Just as Ducarroz found many years ago, a video helped her overcome her mental health challenges. She now wants to help others do the same. With this in mind, she and her friend Patrick Kelly created the Instagram account MindTricks.

MindTricks is aimed at athletes from the world of action sports and beyond and is a judgment-free platform meant to discuss mental health challenges.

Nikita hopes that her story and the discussion on the posts will encourage others to share their own mental health struggles while being inspired and connected to other athletes going through tough times. The ultimate goal is for individuals to realize that they are not alone and can overcome anything.

Gabriel Wibmer, part of the next generation of mountain biking’s Trials and Freeride scene, has pulled out all the stops in his latest edit. ‘The Grind’ sees the young Austrian lift his creativity to another level, hitting the streets of Hamburg with a new perspective on what obstacles can be ridden, and how he can ride them.

Already known for his incredible ability to blend Trials and Freeride disciplines into mind bending edits, Gabriel has added inspiration from BMX street and flatland into the mix to create this truly unique piece of content. Gabriel approached bike sponsor Canyon, with an idea to produce grind pegs which would work on his full-suspension Spectral AL trail bike. Machined from scratch, these custom-made BMX style pegs were the first step on Gabriel’s journey towards producing this all new edit.

From rail grinds to flat land spins, Gabriel unlocked a whole bag of new tricks while getting to grips with the grind pegs and goes on to explore what’s possible on this one-of-a-kind MTB setup.

“Our idea was to combine MTB with BMX and for this we watched several BMX edits and one thing became clear to us very quickly – we would definitely need Grind Pegs!
With the help of Canyon, this idea was very quickly implemented, so within 2 weeks I had an absolute dream bike with a custom made axle and Grind Pegs. Of course, we did not know at the time, whether this could work at all, but that’s exactly why the whole project was so exciting for us.
After some initial difficulties, we went to Hamburg for 14 days to realize the whole project. Of course, not everything went according to plan, but I’m definitely stoked that we were able to bring the whole idea to life and implement a piece of BMX into the MTB scene.” – Gabriel Wibmer

If you’ve ever been to Whistler Bikepark, you’ve probably been overtaken by a golden-haired rider – her name is Amy Ertel. She has just joined the RASOULUTION team to get support in her professional career, giving Amy the opportunity to focus on riding.

Born and raised in the heart of the mountain bike capital, Whistler, BC (CAN). Amy discovered mountain biking at an early age through her father who she still rides with today.

“With more and more girls and women shredding bike parks and taking on freeriding, it is exciting to watch the progression of female mountain biking. Improving her level gradually, Amy started to take an interest in competitions to the point that today she has several good results to her name.

So far in the 2022 season the 20-year-old has placed second and third in the BC DH Cup, a finalist at the Crankworx Whistler Whipoff and has participated in the Darkhorse events in Revelstoke (CAN), and Bellingham (USA).

Few years ago, the product development team at ABUS started the task of developing a worthy successor to the successful MonTrailer performance model. The goal: to develop an open face helmet for enduro riders and ambitious singletrack fans as well as a specific small group with the highest demands – their own gravity team. Safety has always been crucial to the experts at ABUS. In order to increase it even more, the CliffHanger’s shell has been significantly deepened at the back of the head when compared to the previous model, ensuring extra coverage. In addition to spectacular slopestyle action, an unbelievable 120,000 spectators and a firework display of world’s firsts, the Red Bull District Ride 2022 also had one more novelty: For the first time in the history of the Nuremberg-based urban freeride event, five women were giving their everything on the breathtaking course between Kaiserburg and Hauptmarkt. The Red Bull TV video “Women’s Progression Session” tells their story.

Caroline Buchanan (AUS), Gemma Corbera (ESP), Patricia Druwen (GER), Kathi Kuypers (GER) and Ellie Chew (NZL) made up the quintet that was allowed to practice on an FMB Diamond mountain bike slopestyle course for the first time in history. As part of the official training sessions, the five female riders had the opportunity to prove their skills on what is probably the most spectacular slopestyle course in the world, to train with the best male riders in the world and to improve their own riding through mutual exchange. During the three days on site, they were able to tackle the various obstacles and try out what is possible at their own pace and without the pressure of competition.

The highlight for the five women was definitely the actual attendance in the Best Trick Contest of the Red Bull District Ride 2022 on Nuremberg’s packed main market. After several thrilling runs on the Big Air Jump, with Suicide No Handers, Caroline attempting a frontflip or Ellie attempting a Backflip Nac Nac, it was Gemma Corbera, who finally decided the contest with a backflip.

“Being part of the Red Bull District Ride was great. The best thing was being able to train with the guys again and have these insane jumps that I don’t have at home. The atmosphere between the riders was good as always and it was an incredible experience to ride in front of such a big crowd. About Red Bull District Ride

The Red Bull District Ride is the biggest urban Mountain Bike slopestyle event in the world, taking place in the old city center of Nuremberg, Germany. Highlights of the Red Bull District Ride are the Best Trick Contest on Friday evening and the Slopestyle Contest on Saturday, where the world’s best 15 MTB slopestyle riders compete.

The Red Bull District Ride follows a course from the Kaiserburg to the Hauptmarkt, where the grand finale takes place with the Big Air Jump in the heart of Nuremberg. The course leads right through the old town and is divided into five different districts, which each requires different skills from the riders. The Red Bull District Ride doesn’t feel like a pure slopestyle or freeride contest as it also includes a few elements of skate park riding, but with big jumps, drops and step-downs. After 2005, 2006, 2011, 2014 and 2017, where 80.000 people attended the event, the Red Bull District Ride took place for the sixth time this year, attracting over 120,000 visitors. Joining the ranks of the previous winners Aaron Chase (USA), Cam McCaul (USA), Sam Pilgrim (GBR), Brandon Semenuk (CAN) and Nicholi Rogatkin (USA) was Swedish rider Emil Johansson in 2022. Thomas Genon aka Tommy G, known for one of the best styles in mountain biking is on his way to his 9th consecutive Red Bull Rampage.

Tommy showcases his proven track record for creating artistic content in his latest video project, Mine Line. Here he uses his unique riding style to pay homage to his heritage. In the heart of his Belgian roots, Mine Line sees Tommy showing his gratitude for his great-grandfather in a way only he could!

Ancestor veneration is one of the most widespread spiritual practices in the world. It is celebrated differently in different cultures, but in general, there is nothing better than honoring your history by doing what you do best.

Mine Line is all about friendship, hard work, and open-mindedness. Values that bring us to Genon’s hometown, Liège, Belgium, also home to one of the four authentic coal mines in Europe.

Tommy shows his excellent riding close to his origin by building and riding with friends in his city’s coal mine on the mine’s slag heap.

“When I look back on this project, what stands out the most are the weeks I spent with my friends, building, riding, and shooting. It was a great experience that will remain a memory of happy moments with my friends.

The idea came up some time ago, but it took a while to become a reality. Also, the fact that it was where I grew up and having my family around was amazing. The project itself is something that takes me back a few generations and is much more meaningful.” – Thomas Genon.

Two of the most well-known names in action sport filmmaking were a big part of this project: Rupert Walker, a filmmaker from Victoria, BC, and Clay Porter from California.

Rupert is known for dropping some undeniably skilled clips, both as a biker and a filmmaker. Working on various projects within the MTB scene, he frequently creates content with legends like Brandon Semenuk. Most recently releasing the amazing work of Parallel, Rupert has shown once again his talent and creativity in the latest project with Thomas Genon.

Behind the other lens was Clay Porter. Since the age of 17, Porter has dedicated his life to filmmaking, with projects all over the world. Clay has contributed to the progress of the sport with each new release and by creating films such as Deathgrip.
