ATHLETES – Content, contests and partnerships. A retrospective of Thomas Genon & RASOULUTION’s intense 2021 season.

Our very own Thomas Genon, aka Tommy G, is known for his unique style and fluid riding, that he easily demonstrates on a variety of bikes on all kinds of surfaces. With his 2021 season almost in the books, we look back at what has been a fruitful year with great collaborations between RASOULUTION, Thomas and his partners.

CONTENT & PR – Photography is an art and so is MTB, why not put them together?

Thomas loves to dedicate time and passion to elaborate but authentic projects, and RASOULUTION strives to assist him in the best way possible in financing, planning and releasing these.  When Shimano approached us early 2021 looking for potential ideas for activating in MTB, we brainstormed possibilities together. Thomas had one strong focus: MTB photography as art.

It all made sense and Thomas, together with photographer JB Liautard, came up with the concept: The Art of MTB. They created some of the most striking MTB shots ever; Shimano was delighted. A few months later, Thomas and JB released the 2nd instalment of this ‘Art of MTB’ project that could potentially extend into further editions. At RASOULUTION, we are glad to have been a big part of this unique project.

“Cycling is a form of art in every way you look at it, JB and Thomas know it well and brought it to life with The Art of MTB project. Shimano is stoked to give people the opportunity to see the techniques and dynamics that lie behind such a masterpiece, born from the fusion between creativity and pure riding talent.” – Tommaso Amadio, Sports Marketing Coordinator Off-Road, Shimano

The work for RASOULUTION did not stop there as we lead the PR for the projects. For part one, we focused on written media and the project gained 20 pages of coverage in prestigious MTB magazines. Our focus for part 2 was online press, where the project was featured on 25 sites.

PARTNERSHIPS – Schwalbe and Look launch new exclusive collaborations with Thomas

A top-level slopestyle and freerider, Thomas Genon is one of the most versatile mountain bike riders out there. For that reason, RASOULUTION identified German tire brand Schwalbe as a potential perfect fit for Thomas, with tires capable of withstanding the most extreme jumps and landings, at Crankworx or Red Bull Rampage. Since the beginning of the year, Thomas has been riding his Schwalbe products all over the world, delivering great results. He also recorded an episode of Schwalbe’s podcast series.

2021 has also been a year of product co-development for Thomas and his new pedal partner Look. RASOULUTION wanted to enable Tommy to participate in the development of products made by riders for riders. Look, a world-renowned pedal brand, saw potential for Thomas to become their new ambassador on the MTB scene and both parties have been working together on developing a new product since the beginning of the year, with Thomas riding the prototype versions and providing feedback to Look, step by step.

CONTESTS – Crankworx shows and a last-minute invite for Red Bull Rampage

As a former winner of the Red Bull Joyride, Thomas Genon already is a veteran of the Crankworx contest and fest series. On his schedule for 2021: Innsbruck and British Columbia.

Competing across Whip-Offs, Speed & Style as well as his main discipline Slopestyle, Thomas once again demonstrates his versatility as a rider. With solid results across all Crankworx contests, Tommy G’s highlight of the Crankworx season has been the head-to-head finals of Innsbruck’s Speed & Style competition, that he lost with the narrowest margin to his close friend and fellow RASOULUTION athlete Tomas Lemoine.

Thomas Genon would not be Thomas Genon without Red Bull Rampage. For the 8th time in a row, he lined up at the start of the biggest MTB freeride event of the season in Utah.

“Every year Rampage becomes a little bit more important to me. I have the feeling that I truly can express myself here. I love to be able to combine freeride and slopestyle. Showing what I can do at the highest level of both disciplines at the same time makes me very happy.” – Thomas Genon in his pre-Rampage interview.

Combining his freeride skills with his slopestyle background, the Belgian ripper finished on a strong seventh place with 77.00 points and has already qualified for the 2022 edition.

The result becomes even more impressive considering that Thomas received his last-minute invite while already participating at Crankworx B.C. with a full focus on slopestyle. Tommy and RASOULUTION pulled out all the stops to bring him to the desert as soon as possible and have the best preparation possible. Highlighting the Belgian’s feeling towards the event, RASOULUTION furthermore distributed a press release with an interview that has been picked not only by special interest bike media, but also was publish across different general interest media.

Eight times in a row – Tommy G happy to start at Red Bull Rampage again

After a long season that saw him ride two Crankworx events, Red Bull Roof Ride, Red Bull Hard Line and Loosefest Malmedy, Thomas Genon is about to ride Red Bull Rampage as the conclusion to his year. He talks about his thoughts and objectives ahead of his 8th consecutive participation in the biggest freeride MTB event in the world. Watch it live on Red Bull TV on Friday: https://www.redbull.com/int-en/events/rampage.

How do you feel for your return to Red Bull Rampage after the cancellation of the event in 2020?

I’m really glad to have the opportunity to come back and show what I can do. The last time I rode, in 2019, I crashed and didn’t manage to do what I set out to achieve. It was frustrating not to be able to wipe that memory the following year; it’s so much better when Rampage goes ahead! Now we’re back to a site we’ve already used, the last time in 2017, we will be able to reuse some of the old lines but the line crossings will also make it difficult to be very creative.

It’s already your 8th Rampage in a row, with only a few riders having more consecutive entries that you do. Is it special for you?

I think Rampage is one of those events where the first thing you need is experience. The more you have, the better you ride! I learn a little bit more every year.

You’ve mixed up slopestyle, downhill and freeride a lot this season, with your first Red Bull Hardline participation and big freeride sessions in Belgium. How was it?

It’s been one of the best summers of my life on the bike! It was amazing to have so many new goals. I had loads of fun and made a lot of progress on my downhill bike.

What’s your objective for Rampage?

The most important thing for me is to create a line that will put together all my skills in an optimal way. It’s always tough to find the balance, even more so when it all depends on what you will find on site. I have to American builders to help me, Dylan and Scotty. Dylan is a Utah local so that’s great. My main goal will be to create a line I will be happy with and ride as well as possible.

Is it the highlight of your season?

Every year Rampage becomes a little bit more important to me. I have the feeling that I truly can express myself here. I love to be able to combine freeride and slopestyle. Showing what I can do at the highest level of both disciplines at the same time makes me very happy.

You received a last-minute invite for this year’s edition, how did it affect your preparation?

The invite came in when I already was in Canada for Crankworx which I had been focusing on for a while already. Of course, I would have loved to ride a bit more in Utah before Rampage but I’ve done so much on the downhill bike this summer that I feel ready!

Red Bull Rampage will be live on Red Bull TV on Friday 15 October at 8pm CET: https://www.redbull.com/int-en/events/rampage.

Danny MacAskill and Duncan Shaw cruising in Wales and Scotland

Back in the summer of 2021, with news of their first Drop and Roll shows in two years on the horizon, Danny MacAskill and Duncan Shaw decided to dust off the tour bus, load up the trials bikes and head out for a couple of days. The two friends explored what riding the Welsh coast had to offer, before then travelling north to more familiar sights on the shores of Scotland.

Shot 100% on GoPro “Cruising Vol 1” takes you along for the ride as Danny MacAskill and Duncan Shaw visit the shores of North Wales and places like Abergele and Llandudno in the search for some new spots to explore on their trials bikes. Moving north, the crew swapped the Welsh coast for the northeast coast of Scotland in Morayshire starting with an abandoned sea swimming pool in Tarlair before riding Macduff Harbour, Cullen Harbour and then riding the well-known Cullen viaduct.

Duncan Shaw gave us some insights about the last months:

How did the pandemic affect the Drop and Roll shows and the people around it? What were you guys up to in the last 1.5 years?

Duncan Shaw: It has been a weird one for sure and we have definitely missed being out on the road and in front of the crowds. Luckily, we have had lots of trails to ride and plenty of trials riding in the garden to keep us busy and keep up the skills.

You were finally able to have shows at Eurobike, at Area 47, in Sölden and at the EWS finals. How was that – being able to travel again and being back in front of an audience?

Duncan Shaw: It was so good to be back on the road with the team and it was even better to finally be back doing shows in front of some awesome crowds. We were a bit worried that we would all be a bit rusty, but the crowds helped us get over that and after the first show we felt up to speed again. Eurobike was just as busy if not busier in terms of spectators than before, Austria was great as always and we even managed to get some time riding the trails at Sölden. It was especially nice to be back doing shows in Scotland as even before the pandemic we don’t get a chance to do as many in Scotland as we would like. In typical Scottish fashion, the weather was cold and wet, and we were worried that no one was going to show up, but the hardy Scottish fans came out in droves and watched the shows in the rain.

By watching the latest clip you can really tell that you guys are having fun any day you are out on the bikes. What’s the difference in between riding with friends only and riding in front of a cheering crowd?

Duncan Shaw: It definitely feels different. Sometimes it is hard to get going when riding by yourself, but when you have big crowds cheering you on, it totally helps to get you going!

Are there any plans to release more video content from Drop and Roll in the future?

Duncan Shaw: Yes, we actually filmed a lot of content when we were on tour over the past 4 weeks across Germany, France, Austria and finally Scotland so expect a video of that to drop in a few weeks.

Ups and Downs in BC: Max Fredriksson’s personal vlog on Crankworx BC

Max Fredriksson’s Crankworx BC experience demonstrated once again how close together euphoria and success on one hand and disappointment and frustration on the other can appear. In his latest video, the Swedish slopestyle ace takes us to Silverstar, BC to witness his appearance at the second Crankworx slopestyle contest of the season from his first training run to the finals.

The video shows the slopestyle elite warming up during practice runs as well as dealing with down time due to weather related breaks. Spoiler alert: Of all riders, Max has definitely the biggest potential for a side career as driving range pro!

Entering the finals, Max delivered a solid first run, but unlike fellow Swedish rider Emil Johansson, who claimed his fifth consecutive win, Max was ultimately stopped and taken out of the contest by mechanical.

Rasoulution Athletes Deliver Spectacular Show at Crankworx BC

Crankworx BC, the new addition to the Crankworx series, celebrated its debut on the first October weekend.

The unofficial substitute for this years’ Red Bull Joyride event turned out to be a complete success. Despite the harsh weather conditions in the days prior to the competition, which made the course run a bit slow, on finals day, prime conditions were in store. Polish X-Games medalist David Godziek put down a heater of a run, showing huge tricks like a Twister and a Cashroll Barspin and got rewarded with the bronze medal. German phenom Erik Fedko showed an extraordinary performance with highly complex combos like a Truck Driver to Tailwhip to Barspin or a 360 Windshield Wiper and managed to climb the leaderboard all the way to a second-place finish. At the end of the day, Swedish powerhouse Emil Johansson remained unbeaten once again. After putting down a clinic of a run, filled with unique tricks such as an Opposite 360 Double Tailwhip or a Truck Driver to Downside Double Tailwhip, EJ won his fifth consecutive Crankworx in a row.
