Epic mountain bike season 2024 at Epic Bikepark Leogang

Epic downhill action, hand-built singletracks, nerve-wracking World Cup excitement and joyous festival atmosphere – in other words: the mountain bike season at Epic Bikepark Leogang is just around the corner. Saalfelden Leogang is once again shining with numerous highlights in 2024, making a bike trip to the Pinzgau region a must-do this season. The official kick-off is on 9 May, when the Epic Bikepark opens its gates.

Epic long bike season 2024, new single track and online discount

A bike season from the beginning of May to November is truly something to be proud of and gives the bike community more than enough time to take on all 17 bike park lines and single tracks or sharpen their skills in the 30,000 square meter Riders Playground, where nine additional lines of varying difficulty are waiting, as well as a bag jump, pump track, dirt line and drop zone. If you can’t bear another month without bike action, you can already pedal up to the Schwarzleo Trail or Knappen Trail and warm up for the grand opening – the two natural single tracks in Saalfelden Leogang are already open.

The AlteSchmiede Trail, which could already be ridden briefly last year during the BIKE Festival as part of a soft opening, is the newest addition to the family of hand-shaped trails, that are created entirely without the use of heavy machines. It leads through flowing turns, north shore elements and easy technical passages over approx. 3.5 kilometers through natural forest and alpine meadows. The trailhead is easily reached via the Asitz or Steinbergbahn cable cars and then via the Asitz Trail in the direction of Saalbach Hinterglemm. After around 350 meters, just turn right.

Thanks to the Online Bikebonus, an early decision for a mountain bike trip in Saalfelden Leogang will once again save you some money this year. With the dynamic pricing system, both day and multi-day tickets can be purchased in advance at a lower price. A new feature is that the smartphone becomes the bike ticket and paves the way through the turnstile. Online ticket purchases also include free access to a bike mechanic app for two months, which helps you set up your bike in the best possible way.

Mountain Bike World Cup, BIKE Festival and more

If you don’t just come to Saalfelden Leogang for the trails, but also want to indulge in the cultural and community aspects of mountain biking, the foothills of the Leoganger Steinberge are the place to be. At the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series, local heroes Vali Höll and Andi Kolb will do their utmost to defend their downhill wins from last year and once again make the fans in the finish area at the Asitzbahn go crazy. From 7 to 9 June, the downhill riders will be joined by enduro and e-enduro athletes in their respective hunt for world cup points.

The legendary BIKE Festival will also return to Saalfelden Leogang in the fall. From 13 to 15 September, visitors can once again marvel at many brands’ products and test new bikes from numerous renowned exhibitors in the Expo Area or optimize their own bike handling in workshops and ride-outs with the stars of the scene.

An even greater sense of community is created at the open-to-everyone races of the auner Austrian Gravity Series, whose fourth competition takes place in Saalfelden Leogang at the beginning of October, or at the Clean The Trail Days, where mountain bike guests, together with the local community and supported by the bike park’s partners, clean up the lines and trails at the end of the day. This activity in particular – alongside the minimally invasive trail building – stands for the high value placed on sustainability and nature conservation in the mountain bike region.

Saalfelden Leogang is a “UCI Bike Region”

Saalfelden Leogang was recently awarded a special distinction. The “UCI Bike Region” label recognizes the region’s outstanding commitment to cycling. Not only does the history of Saalfelden Leogang as a regular venue for world cups and world championships play a role here, but also the destination’s pioneering role in terms of sustainable bike tourism. Further criteria for the decision were the increase in bike use, the expansion of the infrastructure, safety and accident reduction, bike training for the next generation and the dedicated financing of the planned projects.

“It fills us with pride that we are the second region in Austria to be awarded this label. It is a great recognition of our commitment to cycling and motivates our entire team to continue on this path,” explains Marco Pointner, Managing Director of Saalfelden Leogang Touristik.

NEW VIDEO: Danny MacAskill and Steve Peat ride the Trotternish Ridge

Danny MacAskill is happiest when his friends are having fun. Which is why he invited Steve Peat up to the Isle of Skye, Danny’s homeland, to show him the fun that can be had on a ridgeline rollick. The Trotternish Ridge is an epic route that links together multiple summits starting at the Quiraing and finishing at the Old Man of Storr, two stunning geographical landmarks that bookend the plateau.

But, as is common with all rides with mates, much ‘spracheling’ occurs. ‘Spracheling’, as you’ll learn in this film, is how Danny describes the kind of time-consuming detours and incidents that delay or increase the length of a ride. Forgotten equipment, mechanicals, stops to change layers, needing ‘another’ coffee or swig from a flask, confused directions, and lost folks. It’s this kind of low-level mayhem that makes a ride all the more fun with friends.

“Avail optics presented me with the opportunity to develop my own Freeride goggle. Something I’ve always wanted to have input in. Allowing me to compete with the highest level of product, designed specifically for the job.

After a few years of R&D & real world testing during training sessions and in the biggest events on the circuit like Crankworx & Rampage. I am super stoked to now launch these new Freeride goggles together with Avail Optics. They feature super wide, dual pane, magnetic lenses and will launch in 3 signature colorways”. – Emil Johansson.

The Johansson MTB goggle feature super wide panoramic, dual pane lenses with Primatic® coating, 7 point magnetic lenses and Avail’s trade mark ClipLoc® security system.

“Working with Emil on this project has been perfect. Our vision is to design market leading products and Emil’s philosophy in attention to detail matches that of Avail. Avail Optics aims to make a name for themselves quickly in the sports industry, especially in biking. NEW VIDEO: Ayato Kimura’s “Tropical Vibes – Ayato’s Way”

Ayato_Kimura_Tropical_Vibes_©_@satohi.saijo

The city of Okinawa in the eponymous prefecture in the absolute south of Japan is certainly a popular subtropical holiday destination, but has no reputation as a mountain bike Mecca. Until now! Mountain bike freerider Ayato Kimura has recognized the incredible potential of the city for urban freeride of the rougher kind and shows in his new video “Tropical Vibes – Ayato’s Way” what he imagines a summer vacation in Okinawa to be like.

Ayato Kimura is known for his unique style, which combines technically demanding trials riding with raw freeride and downhill elements. “Tropical Vibes – Ayato’s Way” is clearly more about downhill and freeride and Ayato not only demands a lot from himself, but also from his Specialized Demo. With countless stair sets, massive gaps, wall rides, a front flip into the flat and a suicide no hander, the 19-year-old from Gunma shows that he easily lives up to his great role models.

“Filming was actually planned for two weeks but ended up taking a whole month. As a result, however, the video now shows the full range of my skills and I’m very happy about that. I’m most proud of the front flip with the downhill bike. I really wanted to have it in the video, even though I had hardly tried it out before. The fact that we didn’t need a ramp to do it, but were able to use ‘natural’ terrain, makes it even better.” – Ayato Kimura

Overall, the production of “Tropical Vibes – Ayato’s Way” had a few hurdles to overcome. For example, Ayato had broken his collarbone in the Whistler skate park just six weeks before filming started. Also, he had no prior experience on a downhill bike. Choosing the Specialized Demo with its aluminum frame proved to be the right choice: the bike survived the countless hard impacts that Ayato’s powerful riding demanded without any damage. However, despite several attempts, Ayato will have to tackle the eleven-meter drop (36 feet) again on his next Okinawa vacation.

“The biggest challenge and at the same time the most dangerous trick was definitely the eleven-meter drop. After we discovered it by chance towards the end of the shoot, I quickly realized that I really wanted to try it. We had a day to prepare the jump and landing before I gave it a go for the first time. In the air, I felt like I was at the Red Bull Rampage – I’d never had so much airtime before. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough momentum when I jumped off, landed too short and crashed. With minor injuries to my legs and face, I had to abort the action and when we tried again during the second part of the shoot, it unfortunately didn’t work out any better. But the drop is definitely still on my bucket list.” – Ayato Kimura

Okinawa’s impressive cityscape with its many downhill options and picturesque beaches is also one of Ayato’s favorite places off the bike. And of course, a tropical vibes video should not miss out on surfing: bike and rider also cut a fine figure on the water.

“Upon first hearing about Ayato’s film concept, it had a lot of us at the brand excited – and we’re even more pleased with how he’s brought his vision to life. We hope you all enjoy this project as much as we do, and hope it inspires you to ride.” – Fiona Swartz, Global Sports Marketing Manager – Freeride & Gravel | Specialized Bicycle Components

BREAKING NEWS: GT X TG – Tommy G joins the GT Bicycles roster.

Image

Munich, 5 February 2024 – It’s official. GT Bicycles has signed Thomas Genon, aka Tommy G. The Californian bike brand, founded in 1972, will start supporting the Belgian rider for his first competition of the season, Red Bull Hardline in Tasmania, on 23 and 24 February.

GT or TG. The two initials were just waiting for their partnership. The Californian bike brand now equips Thomas Genon, aka Tommy G, a freeride legend with ten consecutive Red Bull Rampage participations.  The Belgian rider will ride a Fury Carbon frame, designed for downhill mountain biking. A return to his teenage years for Thomas, who fell asleep one Christmas Eve in the 2000s with his new GT frame, found under the Christmas tree, before turning professional.

I am thrilled to be joining this iconic brand. The feeling I got with the GT team has been great so far. They understand my sport, my passion and they all ride bikes and are very familiar with the freeride scene. I feel like I am at the right place and this gets me pumped for the future “, comments Thomas Genon.

GT Bicycles, which signed a multi-year contract with the rider, had a frame customized by Alistair Mclean of Fat Creations Custom Paints. A true collaboration between artist and rider. With a purple color and the initials GT x TG, visible, sealing their partnership.  The set-up was filmed by Jules Langeard, Tommy G’s go-to videographer.

Wow TG on GT, what a great announcement. We are very excited to welcome Tommy G to the party here at GT! What an amazing story this is, he started out riding GT as a kid trying to make a name for himself. Full circle, now he is bringing his amazing riding back to where it all started. He is the latest to join our Wrecking Crew here where we are all about Fast Lines and Good Times. I speak for the whole team when I say we are all so stoked to have you back with GT . . . TG!” – Jason Schiers, Managing Director from GT Bicycles.

Thomas joins GT’s roster of some of the most accomplished riders in mountain biking, including Brage Vestavik, Tyler McCaul, Eliot Lapotre, David Lieb, Wyn Masters and Hans Rey. He also joins GT alongside newcomer Jake Atkinson.

Born in 1993, Tommy G has become a pillar of the slopestyle and freeride scene. In 2012, the Belgian rider won Red Bull Joyride in slopestyle at the age of 18. Three years later, he became number one of the FMB Diamond Series Overall.  As for Red Bull Rampage, he has exceptional longevity, with 10 consecutive participations and eight top 10 finishes.

BREAKING NEWS: up & coming Slopestyle talent Jake Atkinson joins forces with GT

Munich, 25 January 2024 – 20-year-old mountain bike prodigy Jake Atkinson and GT Bicycles have officially inked their partnership. The deal promises to catapult Jake’s young career to new heights, with the iconic North American bike brand providing unwavering support for his upcoming endeavors in slopestyle competitions.

Jake Atkinson, whose name shot into prominence in 2023 after clinching the second spot at the Red Bull Roof Ride and conquering the Big White Invitational in Canada, has already carved out a spot for himself in the slopestyle scene. His rise, securing 13th place on the FMB World Tour ranking and bagging the prestigious Red Bull Rookie of the Year 2023 award, paved the way for a coveted spot on the 2024 tour.

In his recent bike check video Jake is presenting his new GT bike:

https://youtu.be/ZpnyPc2gaow?si=LiCJzAujx-Upsw-e

As Jake gears up to kick off the 2024 Crankworx World Tour in Rotorua, New Zealand, he expresses his excitement for the journey ahead with the support of GT Bicycles:

“Looking back at 2023, it’s still sinking in that I get to go full throttle on biking from now on. Thrilled to be part of the GT crew and pumped for whatever 2024 has in store. In the pre-GT era, I was in the bike mechanic grind for three years, barely squeezing in three sessions a week at the skatepark. I was only able to ride big jumps at the competitions and had a steep learning curve. Now, it’s about scoring more ride time, embracing a healthier lifestyle, hitting the gym, and cranking up the bike training. February’s shaping up to be epic with a trip to New Zealand on the horizon. Can’t wait for diverse training vibes, connecting with fellow riders, and throwing down in my first Crankworx comp. Bring it on.”

Jake grew up in Kendal, a town in the northwest of England. Hailing from a big family — four brothers strong — Jake’s way into professional mountain bike riding was as unorthodox as it gets. Starting at the tender age of three on a bike plucked from a river by his brother, Jake’s passion for the sport took root.

His journey saw him transition through trials at seven, BMX at eleven, followed by exclusive skate park riding for six years. Influenced by legends such as Danny MacAskill, Harry Main, and Scotty Cranmer, Jake’s father remains an essential part of his riding journey, regularly sharing skate park sessions together.

In 2020, Jake built up his first custom jump bike from a mix of secondhand frame and old parts found in his parents’ workshop. Three years as a bike mechanic and countless hours at the skatepark, mostly post-work sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays plus Sundays, laid the foundation for his extraordinary skills.

His belief in a professional biking career was a distant dream until 2022 when he ventured into local bronze events, showcasing his prowess on dirt jump courses and proving that he was destined for more than skateparks. In a turn of events, Jake, due to a lack of dirt spots in his area, dug his own jumps on his parents’ farmland in 2023. The culmination of this effort was to be witnessed at the Red Bull Roof Ride 2023 in Poland, where he soared through the biggest jumps of his career, landing him a well-deserved second place.

Jason Schiers, Managing Director of GT Bicycles, is convinced of the qualities of the new addition:

“We at GT are very excited to be involved in the beginning of Jake story, not only is he a Great Talent but he also embodies the joy of riding and the spirit of Good Times that is at the center of what we do here at GT. We are happy to announce him as the newest member of the growing global GT Wrecking Crew, and we welcome him to the family and wish him the best of luck as he spreads his wings this year chasing the dream.”

Partnering with RASOULUTION Sports Marketing agency, Jake Atkinson secured key alliances for his professional debut in 2024, solidifying his position as one of the most exciting rookies to look out for in the future.

Tarek Rasouli, Managing Director is looking forward to supporting Jake in his journey:

“I met Jake in 2022 at Tomas Lemoine‘s Invitational for the first time and witnessed his amazing style and skatepark skills. After following his breakthrough 2023 season we are super happy to help him build his career in slopestyle and mountain biking. He is a nice guy and very talented rider and I am sure he has a lot more in the tank. The partnership with GT is a great match and will help him to focus on riding from now on.”

Next to a dirt jump bike, GT will equip Jake with a downhill, enduro, e-MTB and gravel bike. To kick off 2024 Jake also signed partnerships with Gusset, Halo and Matt Jones’ brand Helfare with further partnerships to be revealed soon.

Before Crankworx Rotorua Jake will be riding and training in Queenstown New Zealand and will spend more time down-under afterwards.

Get ready to witness the fusion of skill and style as Jake Atkinson and GT Bicycles redefine the limits of slopestyle mountain biking.

With 28 participating bike parks, including five newcomers, the association knew how to impress as usual and gave Gravity Card users 44 new trails and lines to ride. The tickets to shred all of these incredible 31 bike parks are already available online – the Gravity Card pre-sale has begun.

“We are very pleased about an extremely successful Gravity Card season in 2023. Sales figures and turnover speak for themselves. NEW VIDEO: Gabriel Wibmer’s “GRAVEL MANIA”

New tricks, new lines, new best times. Boundaries are there to be pushed. This applies in the world of mountain biking, as in any other extreme sport. When street trials and freeride pro Gabriel Wibmer sets his sights on such a limit, it is usually spectacular – often with the attribute “don’t try this at home”. This is also the case this time, when everything revolves around the Austrian’s choice of bike. Instead of enduro or downhill, he sends his CANYON gravel bike on a tour de force through some of the most famous bike parks in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

The Lienz and Kals bike parks in East Tyrol, the Bike Kingdom Lenzerheide in Switzerland, the Innsbruck and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis bike parks in Tyrol, and the Samerberg bike park in Germany are true mountain bike paradises. But instead of full suspension, wide flat bars and knobby tires, Gabriel Wibmer relies on the exact opposite: no suspension, drop bars and – at least for him – an unusual geometry with significantly narrower tires. That’s right, Gabriel Wibmer rides his CANYON Grizl gravel bike. In fact, only two identical bikes were used in the entire edit, both of which survived filming unscathed.

And that’s saying something, because Gabriel didn’t spare himself or the material: “Riding trails on the gravel bike was intense. I’m used to zero suspension from the trials bike, but the drop bar and the geometry were quite a challenge. Your head is so far forward that you’re almost hanging upside down on the bike, the brakes on the drop bars are elsewhere than I’m used to and that combined with single trails and jumps – that was pretty intense. The low weight of the bike was also a problem when jumping, as even the tiniest gusts of wind could cause real trouble. Estimating the right speed wasn’t easy either – the gravel bike is so much faster than a downhill bike. Also, you feel every single stone and every brake bump.”

The most difficult scene turned out to be the Crankworx Whip-Off jump in Innsbruck. Despite Gabriel and his team only needing two attempts, they were primarily a mental challenge. For more “normality”, Gabriel held the bike at the top of the handlebars and therefor had no chance to brake during the roll-in. Bottom line: he had to jump, whether it was too fast, too slow or just right.

“We wanted to do something completely new that no one had done before us. And since gravel biking is generating a lot of hype right now, it made sense to do something cool with it and take it into a new level. At the beginning we didn’t really know how far we could push things. I’m super happy with the result and how we made every idea come to life. However, during the video shoot, I also realized how cool it is that mountain bikes exist.” – Gabriel Wibmer

Newsflash / Video: Tenacity – Tommy G, riding his tenth Red Bull Rampage final with a broken wrist!

Red Bull Rampage has been the pinnacle event for Thomas Genon aka Tommy G for over 10 years now. From year to year, he prepares himself better and better. The main goal for Tommy is to be happy with the way he rides the line he built with his mates. This year, he can be happy that he even participated again in the contest and eventually finished in the top 10. He only found out that he rode Rampage with a broken wrist after seeing a doctor at home a couple of days after the event. Despite the pain, he finished 9th in the world’s gnarliest freeride event. The full story will be told in Tenacity – a film by Jules Langeard – that traces the adventure of the Belgian rider’s tenth consecutive participation. The video is an emotional documentary in 5 thematic acts. Thomas’ injury and experience run through the narrative.

Tenacity – the film could have been called “broken”, so much so that Tommy G’s broken wrist forms the backdrop to the story and is the key point of the Belgian rider’s tenth participation at Red Bull Rampage. Jules Langeard, behind the camera and a long-time friend of Thomas Genon, delivers a stirring documentary. Like a theatre piece, the film is divided into 5 themed acts – Be Humble, The Strategy, The Pain, The Discipline and The Relief. The initial idea was to show Thomas’ experience and preparation, while at the same time revealing a solid quartet of friends, with shapers and pro riders Louis Reboul and Paul Couderc alongside Tommy and Jules. Obviously, the crash on the very first day, just before the digging days, turned everything upside down.

One of the main focuses from the start was Thomas’ experience. Everything was planned. And just like in an ancient play, you have the disruptive element – the injury.  But he decided to take part and therefore refused to find out the truth about his injury,” comments Jules Langeard.

Tenacity’s scenes reveal all the long preparations leading up to the big day. From equipment preparation to training sessions in Lyon, including the choice of bike (a Canyon Torque AL 27.5, with a single crown fork) and the delivery of the equipment. Tommy G had been thinking about this Red Bull Rampage for a year, the line being the same as in 2022. He knew where and what to modify, and which tricks to improve. Onsite, Tenacity is a good description of the Belgian rider’s mental strength. Especially in act 3, where Loneliness is revealed. One morning, Tommy is getting treated by the physio while leaving his shapers alone on his line with picks and spades.

I wasn’t able to take the lead over the team during the four days devoted to digging. For my part, I didn’t want to do a scan. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have taken part. The physio helped me enormously, mentally too. On the first day of practice, I was still worried. In the end, everything went as well as possible and I did my two runs in the final on Friday”, recalls Thomas Genon.

The Belgian rider finished ninth in the Red Bull Rampage 2023. His eighth top 10 finish at freeriding’s most prestigious event. His tenacity will surprise us again in 2024.

BREAKING NEWS: Women to compete in Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship

NOVEMBER 30, 2023 – Freeride mountain biking will enter a new era in 2024 as women prepare to compete in the first ever Women’s Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship (SWC). Representing the pinnacle of the Slopestyle discipline, the introduction of a women’s category to the SWC is indicative of the level to which the sport has been elevated through years of development. Seeking to maximize the potential of women in freeride mountain biking, the SWC women’s category will provide equal opportunity access to the highest level of the sport featured across the Crankworx World Tour.

“Since 2015, Crankworx has set out to create gender equality through equal prize money, shared podiums, and equal opportunity for men and women, knowing that Slopestyle would be the most challenging to integrate,” said Darren Kinnaird, Crankworx Managing Director.

“Through the development of women’s Speed and Style and, more recently, Women’s Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour Slopestyle events, the road has been paved for women to compete at the highest level of the sport.

After witnessing the women compete at the Crankworx Summer Series in SilverStar this past summer, it became clear to us that they are ready.”

To provide equal opportunity, equal prize money will be awarded across the SWC women’s and SWC men’s categories, with more than $500,000 CAD to be given out during the 2024 Crankworx World Tour and SWC season. Similarly, the Triple Crown of Slopestyle, awarded to any rider who wins three Crankworx slopestyle events in a single season, will be up for grabs to SWC competitors in both the women’s and men’s categories, with a value of $25,000 CAD per crown. Further to that, winners in both the women’s and men’s categories of Red Bull Joyride at Crankworx Whistler are granted lifetime entry to Crankworx Slopestyle events.

“Having the [Slopestyle] World Championships and Triple Crown [of Slopestyle] for women promotes inclusivity and equality in our sport,” said Shealan Reno on the impact that these opportunities will have for the future of the sport.

In 2024, each SWC women’s category event will host six riders, with qualified riders consisting of the six highest ranked riders on the FMB Women’s World Tour Ranking, with a minimum of 500 points, six weeks before an SWC event. Entry to the SWC for riders new to the Slopestyle scene can also be found through a Red Bull Rookie of the Year award win, as a place will be held on the start list at the first SWC event of the year for both the Female and Male award winners of the previous season.

On prequalifying and preparing to compete at the first-ever Women’s SWC event, the 2023 Female Red Bull Rookie of the Year, Patricia Druwen, shared: “I’m super motivated. The jumps are so much bigger and then you have to learn to do your tricks on them at the same time as well. I’m so stoked about having a Women’s Slopestyle competition at Crankworx.”

The 2024 Crankworx World Tour will once again visit the following world-class mountain biking destinations, with broadcasts available live and on demand on Red Bull TV, including both the SWC women’s and SWC men’s categories:

  • Rotorua, New Zealand – March 16-24
  • Cairns, Australia – May 22-26
  • Innsbruck, Austria – June 12-23
  • Whistler, Canada – July 19 – 28

“It’s about time, I’m stoked to have women on the big stage next to the men,” said Kathi Kuypers on the addition of the SWC women’s category. On the events being broadcast globally, Harriet Burbidge-Smith shared that “the fact that we are on broadcast and everything at the same level as the guys is really insane and super motivating.”

An updated FMBA Rulebook is to be released December 2023 reflecting these changes. More information on the 2024 Crankworx World Tour can be found on crankworx.com.

VIDEO: “Discover India” Train & Bike Adventure with Dan Milner

Previous slide
Next slide

November 28, 2023 – When living photography legend Dan Milner tells you about his next project, a bike adventure in India, you don’t think twice about jumping onboard. German mountain bike rider Steffi Marth signed up immediately to join Dan and Indian mountain bike rider Vinay Menon for a unique trip. While Dan Milner came up with the idea and documented the trip photographically in his unmistakable way, Thomas Hessmann, in-house filmmaker from ABUS, the project’s partner, captured the journey in moving images. The result is a short film that immerses the viewer deeply in the beauty of an extraordinary region while documenting the challenges that come with such adventure.

You can find the film here: https://youtu.be/hyAlCJBayLs

In the following, the protagonists Dan Milner (photographer), Steffi Marth (professional mountain bike rider), Vinay Menon (professional mountain bike rider) and Thomas Hessmann (videographer) describe their exciting impressions and how they experienced the trip.

How did you come up with the idea for a bike trip in India?

Dan Milner: I’m a sucker for a train journey. Maybe it’s the combination of a slower pace and being at ground level where you get to glimpse life pass by the window, or perhaps it’s the accessibility that trains mean for so many people, especially in places like India. So when I heard about a 140-year old train that was still running through the foothills of the Indian Himalaya, I thought, “hey, I wonder if we could use it as our uplift with the bikes?”

“Steffi, do you want to go on a trip to India with Dan Milner?” What was your first reaction to this request from ABUS?

Steffi Marth: To be honest, I briefly wondered if India was too extreme for me, but when I heard that Dan Milner was part of the trip, I was sold immediately. I didn’t know Dan personally before, but I knew his stories and he is simply an icon when it comes to adventurous MTB stories and he was definitely one I always wanted to work with.

You are from Pune, India and that’s quite far away from Darjeeling region. Have you ever ridden there before or in the area?

Vinay Menon: Darjeeling in West Bengal is way out there from my hometown of Pune in Maharashtra. I hadn’t ridden there before, though I have a few local riding buddies from Darjeeling who always shared rad stories about the trails there. The misty, forest trails are unreal. Having my good buddy Michael McLean from Mountain Bike Kerala as our lead on this trip, great times were guaranteed!

Big mountains, you don’t conquer them, they simply allow you to play on them, so when an opportunity aligned to visit, ride in the mountain maze of the lower Himalayas in Darjeeling, it’s the hills permitting me, us to enjoy the trails there.

What was it like looking over Dan’s shoulder?

Thomas Hessmann: Dan is one of the most uncomplicated people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. He knows exactly what he wants, is absolutely professional, and yet always has that madness in his eyes that you somehow expect from a mountain biker in his class. The work itself never felt like work, because he’s totally committed to the landscape. For him, the focus was always on mountain biking and not the production itself.

When you think back to the trip – which picture or experience do you think of first?

Steffi: The first thing I think of is the highlight we had on the last day: Biking in the sun in front of the snow-covered Himalayan mountains at about 3,500m. The air was so thin, the landscape absolutely unreal and you could just enjoy the experience to the fullest. The sunrise that day was also gigantic. It was bitterly cold and I struggled a bit with the hygiene conditions during the whole trip, but it was all worth it for those moments. India is just awesome, you cannot describe how exotic this country is.

You’ve been to a lot of different adventures all around the world. What made the difference or was special about this trip?

Dan: Putting the train at the center of this adventure gave us a chance to see and immerse ourselves in another side of India that so rarely gets documented in bike trips; the gritty, every day working lives of people who live in the place you’re just visiting and in this case, keep a railway running. The idea came with its own set of challenges though, especially dealing with train guards who had never been confronted with the idea of taking a bike on their train before.

Because of Mountain Biking you’ve travelled and made friends all over the world. How does it feel to host riders in your home country?

Vinay: Being in the sport for over 25 years, I can say mountain biking is my life. The friends I have, are all whom I bonded with because of mountain biking. India and our magnificent mountains are my home, my playground. The awe and excitement I see in the eyes of some of the elites of the sport, when they’re visiting, makes me realize how lucky I am to call India my home. Having top tier riders and photographers enjoying India’s trails puts a smile on my face! I grew up on bike videos and magazine articles and always imagined having India’s incredible mountains being showcased to the mountain biking family around the world. It’s happening now! It inspires more Indian riders to tread down their backyard trails. Once you visit India, you go home a changed person!

You took many great pictures, which is the picture of the trip, that you might not even have on a hard drive but is saved in your very own memory forever?

Dan: It’s probably the mental image of the local porters, sherpas and guides enjoying themselves and letting their hair down over a bottle of brandy we gifted them, and watching them having a dance around the fire in the cold tea house high on the Singalila ridge national park. Sometimes you have to leave the camera in the bag and bank those images for yourself — the moments that remind you that no matter where you are, no matter how remote or different a place, everyone around you is human and we have that in common.

What was the biggest challenge from a professional point of view as a filmmaker and what was the biggest challenge personally?

Thomas: As a one-man film department, you have to do everything on your own, but you also don’t want to slow down the flow or get in the way of the photographer. So: run down the pretty rough trail in front of the bikers, find a spot that’s outside Dan’s radius, find a picture, check the sound, hope that the focus is right and capture the ride properly. Pack everything up, run after it, and do it all over again. And all at an altitude of 3,600 metres after sleeping for 4 hours at -3 degrees in a hut without electricity or running water.

How was the actual mountain biking and would you recommend such a trip?

Steffi: As is often the case in such distant lands, you are naturally on the lookout for cool trails and often it feels as if no mountain biker has ever been on these trails before. That’s exactly what this adventure was all about. We rode through dense bamboo forest, under prayer flags and across wide meadows and mystical forests with really tall, imposing trees. On the very last day we rode 2,000 vertical meter descent, which was a real adventure and took 5 hours.

When Steffi, Dan and Thomas talk about the trip it sounded like a real adventure. Is this also the case for you and was it also special or was it just a normal bike trip for you?

Vinay: Often the toughest journeys lead us to epic summits. This trip is definitely a special one for me! I’m extremely grateful to the team for having given me the opportunity to join and ride with awesome new friends like Steffi, Thomas and with my old bro Mike and the bossman photo master Dan. Thanks a bunch!

BIKE DESTINATIONS – Epic Bikepark Leogang is proof of the huge tourism potential of mountain biking, 13% growth year on year, 70% growth since 2018

Previous slide
Next slide
Saalfelden Leogang in Salzburger Land, Austria, 13 November 2023 – The Epic Bikepark Leogang and the Saalfelden Leogang tourist region are continuing their unbroken upward trend in mountain bike tourism in 2023. With almost 80,000 “Mountain Biker Days” (equivalent to Skier Days), the Leoganger Bergbahnen cable car company recorded an increase of 13 percent compared to the previous year. If you look at the development since 2018, the huge tourism potential of mountain biking becomes even more evident.

When the Leoganger Bergbahnen and the Saalfelden Leogang tourist board set the course for mountain biking over 20 years ago and created the Epic Bikepark Leogang – now one of the most renowned bike parks in Europe – mountain biking as a popular sport was still in its infancy. Today’s numbers show that the Austrian mountain bike pioneers had the right instinct back then.

Leogang’s Mountain bike tourism accounted for around 13 % of total turnover in the 2022/2023 financial year – more than all other summer activities combined. What may not sound like much compared to the top dog, skiing, is quickly put into perspective when you take into account the number of lifts in operation, transport capacities and kilometers of slopes. In 2023 alone, the mountain bike operations recorded a 13 % increase in Mountain Biker Days compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the Online Bikebonus, a sunny summer and a perfect autumn ensured strong sales growth.

A look at the recent past also confirms the upswing in mountain biking. If you look at the last five years, the number of Mountain Biker Days has increased by as much as 70 percent. The number of cable car rides in the bike park has also seen steep growth over the past ten years: from around 150,000 (2014) to over 260,000 (2023) rides per year.

Through targeted brand positioning and strengthening of the off-seasons, the number of hotel overnight stays has also grown to around one million per year, of which almost 50 percent are already accounted for by the summer season. In addition to the hotels, the local bike schools are also registering a growing number of inquiries, too – this is particularly noticeable regarding tours and trainings for good to advanced riders. Beginner courses are mainly attended by families looking for a counterpart or substitute to winter sports.

Marketing: Events, influencers & partners

Although these figures are cause for celebration in Saalfelden Leogang, they don’t come as surprise. Rather, they are the result of targeted development and a sustainable appreciation of mountain bike tourism. The well-developed infrastructure of lines & trails, mountain railroads, hotels, stores, etc. is tailored to bike guests, while the constant further development of the offer is part of the mountain bike hotspot’s DNA. In 2023, this included the soft opening of the AlteSchmiede Trail, the extension of the bike season until the beginning of November and the newly introduced Online Bikebonus, a dynamic pricing system that has been well received by bike guests and has been used many times. Saalfelden Leogang was able to achieve a significant increase in Mountain Biker Days, particularly in the early and late season.

The local hotel industry has also adapted to this and invested more in services for mountain bikers, such as lockable bike cellars, tools for hire and a laundry service for dirty bike clothing. Some hotels also offer their guests their own bike rental service and in some cases even have their own bike guides who provide tour suggestions directly from the hotel.

In addition to marketing measures with extraordinary appeal, such as hosting the Mountain Bike World Championships in 2012, 2020 and 2028 or the annual Mountain Bike World Cup in Saalfelden Leogang, the Austrian bike destination repeatedly generates a lot of attention with targeted individual measures, most recently with an all-female edit featuring the leader of FMB World Women’s Ranking, Patricia Druwen. In addition to this and numerous other forms of influencer activations, the activation of their partners also plays a major role for Saalfelden Leogang, best showcased with the aforementioned video clip, as the ladies were riding on the Hot Shots Fired by GoPro Line.

Austria’s biggest bike region

The three resorts of Saalbach Hinterglemm, Saalfelden Leogang and Fieberbrunn joined forces as “The Skicircus” several winters ago. In 2020, they also came closer together for the summer, to offer mountain and gravel bikers almost unlimited possibilities on two-wheels. With over 90 kilometers of lines and trails, 9 lifts between 7 mountains and a joint bike pass offering almost unlimited gravel and asphaltoptions. For a “well-rounded bike vacation” there are special bike hotels in Saalfelden Leogang such as the Hotel Bacher, the Lebe Frei Hotel Der Löwe, the mama thresl, the Good Life Resort Riederalm, the Ritzenhof – Hotel and Spa am See, the Biohotel Rupertus, the Hotel Salzburger Hof, the Hotel Krallerhof, the Naturhotel Forsthofgut, the Hotel Stockinggut and the Hotel Puradies, as well as competent bike stores such as Sport Mitterer, Sport 2000 Simon, Bikepalast Saalfelden, Shop & Suspension factory and the Bikepoint. To improve your own skills, for guided tours or for riding technique training, the Elements Outdoorsports bike school offers a wide range of services. Press Release: fizik presents its new Nanuq GTX winter bike shoe

Pozzoleone, Italy, 25 October 2023 – fizik’s all new Nanuq GTX winter bike shoe is your weapon of choice for riding on snowy and rainy winter days, when the temperatures drop. Designed as an all-mountain high-top shoe the Nanuq GTX addresses mountain bike riders who go by the philosophy that “there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing”, and wish to tackle snow-covered technical trails or just take their bike for an afternoon spin in the cold. Due to its waterproof but breathable GORE-TEX Koala membrane and its cozy insulated fleece liner and insole the Nanuq GTX truly lives up to its name, which means polar bear in the language of the Inuit.

The shoe’s resilient upper exterior offers protection from the elements with a layered, hardwearing ripstop woven fabric that resists abrasion and tearing. The BOA® L6 Performance Fit System ensures a perfect fit around the ankle, while the high-top fleece socks adds additional warmth and protection.

The fizik Nanuq GTX is available for clip-in as well as for flat pedals. Both versions employ X2 outsole with the Vibram XS Trek EVO technology for excellent grip and traction on and off the bike.

BIKE INDUSTRY – NEOMOUV gets inspiration for its E-Bikes from the world of fashion

La Flèche, France, 9 October 2023 – In a booming e-bike market, NEOMOUV stands out. Known for its cheerful, bubbly colors, the Sarthe-based brand now is taking things one step further by creating the position of an art director. Olivier Schaack, art director of TV5 Monde and a former member of the Canal + group, has been entrusted with this mission: to draw further inspiration from the world of fashion and contemporary trends for the bicycle as everyday object. NEOMOUV thus reinforces its uniqueness. To celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, the French brand has also unveiled two new artistic collaborations, with STOUL Peintresse and XKuz.

In a booming e-bike market, it’s hard for new converts to two wheels to choose a bike and recognize a brand. NEOMOUV’s aim has always been to draw inspiration from fashion trends to make its bikes unique and recognizable at first glance.

Continuing with this philosophy, the electric-assist bike specialist, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, has taken a new step by creating the position of an art director, entrusted with Olivier Schaack, who brings extensive experience in the audiovisual and digital sectors to the job. Olivier Schaack spent nearly 20 years as art director for the Canal + group. He is currently artistic director of TV5 Monde. His mission is to structure NEOMOUV’s approach with rigor and consistency across all media, from bike frames to communication tools, campaigns and social networks.  “A brand needs to be unique and stand out thanks to visual elements that create preference. When they succeed in doing so, some brands no longer need their name to be recognized. How can we do this for a brand of e-bikes, with its technical requirements and a public that is discovering or rediscovering cycling for environmental or economic reasons?” asks Olivier Schaack.

The response is summed perfectly in NEOMOUV’s tagline: “The hardest thing is choosing the color” – color to stand out in a sector where dark tones, from grey to black, still dominate. “Some bicycle brands are recognizable by the design of their models and offer one or two iconic models. That’s not our market. We offer a wide range of twenty-six bicycle models (urban, folding, hybrid and MTB) for a broad public. From the outset, color, inspiring joy and pleasure, was part of NEOMOUV’s DNA,” comments Sophie Guieysse, NEOMOUV’s Managing Director. In the soft mobility segment, the brand aims to offer bicycles that are easy to use, reliable, affordable, and colorful.

At the beginning of 2023, NEOMOUV presented its new, minimalist, but colorful logo: three strokes revealing an N, an M and a V in green, yellow and orange.  For the bicycles, the color range has been reviewed and reduced to 16. “We have 12 permanent colors that are in harmony with the logo, and 4 colors that will change each year according to trends,” explains Olivier Schaack. The new colors will be in line with the latest collections from fashion houses and lifestyle labels.

To realize its design vision, the company can rely on its own industrial facilities. In May, NEOMOUV acquired its Portuguese partner, UNIBIKE, a specialist in assembling and painting.  This acquisition enables NEOMOUV to control part of its supply chain and deliver customized models in small series. “We already deliver bikes to local authorities in their own colors,” explains Sophie Guieysse.

NEOMOUV, the e-bike purist, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with two artistic collaborations: contemporary urban art movement artist STOUL Peintresse and painter/plastician XKuz (Fabien Mazé). The two artists were able to express themselves on the ELAIA 2 urban model. The result: two unique bikes with artsy, urban designs to showcase the UNIBIKE’s experience in paintings.

How was your first Red Bull Rampage experience and what did you think after you left the event?I was completely lost and uninformed about what was going on out there. At the time, there was no one I knew who told me how the event was organized and how to train. It took me a while before I felt like training and coming back stronger!

Tommy, you’ll be taking part in your tenth consecutive Rampage. What are your feelings one week before the event?Every year I look forward to it more and more. I realize how lucky we are to have an event like this for our sport! I can’t wait to see how I improve.

You’ve managed 7 top 10 finishes since 2013. With the experience you’ve gained over the years, how have you modified your preparation?

Preparation for Rampage is very specific. My approach to the line I plan to ride changes every year too. This year I spent most of my time on my freeride bike, whereas before I spent more time on my slopestyle bike.

Or modified and adapted your equipment (suspension, wheels…)?Not really any big changes apart from a single crown fork!

Which bike will you ride in 2023? What will be your Bike-Setup (suspension setup, single crown or double crown, air shock or coil, tire choice…) for this year?Single crown this year! Hard-tuned bike (model Canyon Torque al 27.5) with not much suspension rebound. 2.4 tire  and with a higher pressure than usually. In short, the bike only works well in Utah.

What makes this contest so difficult and special for you?I love the fact that we all come from different backgrounds, we all have a different vision of our line and that’s what makes freeriding so interesting. The only common goal is: “go big or go home”.

Do you have any special habits for Rampage? Do you listen to music? Any lucky charms?Morning workouts are for warming up and visualizing the run. After that I relax and try to stay calm. Music helps. I will do a Rampage playlist. I don’t watch too many runs before me. It can be stressful to see others as stressed as I am, haha.

Let’s talk about lines and shapers: What have you planned for this year’s Rampage and who have you brought to support you (diggers, filmmaker, photographer, etc)?I’ve got my housemate Jules Langeard who’ll be there to film, and Louis Reboul and Paul Couderc to help me on the line. We’re all good buddies and we’ll be in good spirits.

In ten consecutive Rampage participations you have seen it all. You’ve seen all the brilliant runs and all the gnarly crashes. Which Rampage run do you consider the most outstanding ever? For me, a good run on this event is a complete run. That is to say, with complicated sections to go down, tricks on big sets up, style and creativity. There were a lot of good runs, but I’m thinking of Brendan Fairclough (in 2019) and all the Lacondeguy runs.
